Product Description

Suzanis are hand-embroidered textiles, made on cotton fabric using silk threads, this gives the floral motifs a raised texture which gives a unique appearance. They have been hand-stitched (suzani coming from the Persian word for 'needle') using silk thread which also provides a natural lustre (shine). Common motifs include sun and rosette discs signifying life and energy, pomegranates signifying fertility and abundance, and tulips, vines and tendrils signifying beauty and family lineage.

Suzani textiles are primarily woven in the Uzbek cities of Samarkand, Bokhara, Tashkent and Shahrisabz, with each region having their own recognizable style. For example, Samarkand Suzanis include large sun medallions and strong reds and yellows, while Bokhara Suzanis display dense floral fields and symmetrical designs, and Tashkent Suzanis comprise cooler blue palettes. There are also Suzanis produced in other countries such as Afghanistan and India. Afghan Suzani textiles are often woven with a wool or cotton thread instead of silk, and consist of more tribal, abstract designs.

The backing of the cover is cotton with a zipper. The cushion filling is not included, and the cover can be used on any cushion inserts of minimum 45 x 45 cm. When choosing an insert to place inside these covers, it is ideal to use polyester inserts that are 2-4 cm larger than the cover. Place the insert carefully to not break the zipper, by scrunching one side of the insert as you push it inside the cover.

Materials + Care

The pile of this rug is constructed of hand-spun Ghazni wool, and the weft and warp foundation are also constructed of wool. The dyes used are all 100% natural vegetable dyes, derived from plant, fruit and flower skins such as madder root, indigo, pomegranate skin and walnut shells.

Non-Straight Edges: Some rugs may not have completely straight edges due the handmade-nature of the rugs and rigorous production process of washing, dyeing and trimming. Usually these are not noticeable from eye-height.

Creases: Some rugs may have minor creases due to being folded and stored. These are usually flattened out once they are laid out and in the course of normal foot traffic and vacuuming. You can also flatten creases by applying some water to the crease and applying gentle heat using an iron, indirectly over another cloth.

Colour: The colours and shades may vary slightly due to the lighting when photos are taken. This means that the carpet you receive may look slightly different from the picture. Additionally, carpets naturally have a "light" side and a "dark" side, which is determined by the orientation of the wool pile. This is a characteristic of carpets and should be taken into consideration when choosing a carpet for your space.
