Product Description
This is a brand new authentic Mamluk runner, handmade in Afghanistan.
Mamluk rugs are a revival of a legendary carpet tradition originally developed during the Mamluk Sultanate (1250?1517 CE) in Egypt. Originally, these rugs were first designed by Turkmen weavers who emigrated from Central Asia to Egypt. Hence these rugs were only meant for royalty and those of high class and wealth. They were also prized by Venetian merchants at the time, with some rug fragments surviving from the 13th century and even appearances in renaissance paintings such as Paris Bordon's canvas 'The Presentation of the Ring to the Doge'.
Remaining faithful to the original quality of these rugs, Afghan Mamluk rugs have a high knot count similar to Ziegler and Super Kazak rugs, with a medium pile. They are mainly woven in the northern Afghan provinces of Andkhoy, Mazari-Sharif and Kunduz, using high quality Ghazni wool which provides a natural lustre.
They use the asymmetrical Persian (Senneh) knot and have a characteristic design consisting of a central polygonal medallion, surrounded by small floral motifs and repetitive tessellated patterns (reflecting the influence from Islamic geometry patterns). The colours used are often muted pale beige and green, or crimson red with royal blue. Although other colours variations are available.
Materials + Care
The pile of this rug is constructed of hand-spun Ghazni wool, and the weft and warp foundation are also constructed of wool. The dyes used are all 100% natural vegetable dyes, derived from plant, fruit and flower skins such as madder root, indigo, pomegranate skin and walnut shells.
Non-Straight Edges: Some rugs may not have completely straight edges due the handmade-nature of the rugs and rigorous production process of washing, dyeing and trimming. Usually these are not noticeable from eye-height.
Creases: Some rugs may have minor creases due to being folded and stored. These are usually flattened out once they are laid out and in the course of normal foot traffic and vacuuming. You can also flatten creases by applying some water to the crease and applying gentle heat using an iron, indirectly over another cloth.
Colour: The colours and shades may vary slightly due to the lighting when photos are taken. This means that the carpet you receive may look slightly different from the picture. Additionally, carpets naturally have a "light" side and a "dark" side, which is determined by the orientation of the wool pile. This is a characteristic of carpets and should be taken into consideration when choosing a carpet for your space.
