Product Description
Persian rugs have always been associated with sophisticated and affluent households, with regal highly detailed floral designs such as Isfahan, Kashan and Tabriz rugs, however there are many nomadic people in Iran who weave simpler, tribal rugs, including Gabbeh, Hamadan and Qashqai rugs.
Mohtasham rugs are considered the absolute gold standard of city-woven Persian rugs. The name belongs to a legendary master weaver operating in the city of Kashan in the mid-19th century, who revived Kashan’s classical weaving industry.
Mohtasham rugs are famously woven using Kork wool which is the ultra-soft, velvety wool shorn from the neck and underbelly of lambs. This allows for an incredibly tight knot count. The silk fringe threads are characteristic of the fine silk structural foundation lines running through high-grade Kashan workshops. This rug is also signed stating the original owner who commissioned the production of this rug.
These rugs feature a central diamond medallion surrounded by layered blossoming palmettes. They often use warm and luminous colour profiles such as gold/camel-hair, terracotta reds, soft violet/purple jewel tones, and deep indigo. The entire field is a sophisticated islimi (arabesque) vine network and oversized Shah Abbasi lotus blossoms.
This rug has significant fading of the pile in some areas and there is also a medium hole in the rug with torn foundations. This rug can be repaired, please inquire.
Materials + Care
The pile of this rug is constructed of hand-spun Ghazni wool, and the weft and warp foundation are also constructed of wool. The dyes used are all 100% natural vegetable dyes, derived from plant, fruit and flower skins such as madder root, indigo, pomegranate skin and walnut shells.
Non-Straight Edges: Some rugs may not have completely straight edges due the handmade-nature of the rugs and rigorous production process of washing, dyeing and trimming. Usually these are not noticeable from eye-height.
Creases: Some rugs may have minor creases due to being folded and stored. These are usually flattened out once they are laid out and in the course of normal foot traffic and vacuuming. You can also flatten creases by applying some water to the crease and applying gentle heat using an iron, indirectly over another cloth.
Colour: The colours and shades may vary slightly due to the lighting when photos are taken. This means that the carpet you receive may look slightly different from the picture. Additionally, carpets naturally have a "light" side and a "dark" side, which is determined by the orientation of the wool pile. This is a characteristic of carpets and should be taken into consideration when choosing a carpet for your space.
