Product Description
This is a brand new authentic Ziegler small rug, handmade in Afghanistan. This is a small rug that can be used as a door mat or entryway rug to be placed in door entrances.
Ziegler rugs are recreations based on fine Persian-style rugs, namely Sultanabad and Arak rugs, with highly detailed floral designs and a high knot count. They combine Persian motifs (especially Herati, Shah Abbas, and floral medallions) with European aesthetics - muted colours, open fields, and lighter tones.
Originally, Ziegler rugs were designed in 1833 by the the Swiss-British textile firm Ziegler & Co. in Manchester, England, with a manufacturing base in Iran. The goal was to produce a rug design that suited the western market, as an option to the more prevalent tribal, geometric rug designs of Central Asia.
These rugs are also known as 'Chobi' rugs (Persian meaning: wood colour) from their characteristic cream colour resembling pine wood. They use the asymmetrical Persian (Senneh) knot and the design is dominated by floral motifs including palmettes, rosettes, arabesques, scrolling vines and floral sprays.
They are mainly woven in the northern Afghan provinces of Andkhoy, Mazari-Sharif and Kunduz, using high quality Ghazni wool which provides a natural sheen. They often have a relatively lower pile and widespread colour tonal variation (known as 'Abrash' in Persian) to imitate antique rugs.
Materials + Care
The pile of this rug is constructed of hand-spun Ghazni wool, and the weft and warp foundation are also constructed of wool. The dyes used are all 100% natural vegetable dyes, derived from plant, fruit and flower skins such as madder root, indigo, pomegranate skin and walnut shells.
Non-Straight Edges: Some rugs may not have completely straight edges due the handmade-nature of the rugs and rigorous production process of washing, dyeing and trimming. Usually these are not noticeable from eye-height.
Creases: Some rugs may have minor creases due to being folded and stored. These are usually flattened out once they are laid out and in the course of normal foot traffic and vacuuming. You can also flatten creases by applying some water to the crease and applying gentle heat using an iron, indirectly over another cloth.
Colour: The colours and shades may vary slightly due to the lighting when photos are taken. This means that the carpet you receive may look slightly different from the picture. Additionally, carpets naturally have a "light" side and a "dark" side, which is determined by the orientation of the wool pile. This is a characteristic of carpets and should be taken into consideration when choosing a carpet for your space.
