old-persian-hamadan-rug-c-1974
Antique Persian Qum Silk Rug c. 1950

This is an antique (circa 1950) authentic Qum rug, handmade in Iran.

Persian rugs have always been associated with sophisticated and affluent households, with regal highly detailed floral designs such as Isfahan, Kashan and Tabriz rugs, however there are many nomadic people in Iran who weave simpler, tribal rugs, including Gabbeh, Hamadan and Qashqai rugs.

Qum rugs are often woven entirely of silk, including both the pile and foundation, giving them a luminous sheen, softness, and intricate detail. They are crafted using the asymmetrical Persian (Senneh) knot at very high knot densities, allowing for intricate floral scrollwork, elegant medallion layouts, and finely rendered pictorial scenes. Some rug combine silk highlights with wool foundations, but pure silk pieces are especially prized.

Designs typically feature central medallions, flowing arabesques, delicate vines, and stylized blossoms arranged in balanced, symmetrical compositions. Ivory, navy, rich red, gold, and turquoise tones are common, appearing especially vibrant in silk due to its light-reflective quality.

These rugs are woven in the city of Qum, central Iran. Around the 1920s and 1930s, master weavers and designers from established cities such as Kashan and Isfahan relocated to Qum and established workshops there. Because Qum did not have a deeply rooted tribal weaving culture, its carpets developed primarily within workshop settings rather than nomadic traditions. This allowed for careful design planning, technical precision, and an emphasis on luxury materials.
