In most cases, the rugs are named after the city they are woven in. They are dominated by floral patterns symbolising the gardens of paradise, and nature with motifs of deer, goats, trees and other herbivorous animals.

Mashhad rugs are produced in Khorasan province, north-eastern Iran. They were originally designed and woven by the well known Amu Ogli family, producing fine Persian rugs similar in quality and style to Kashan rugs. These rugs often utilise fine Khorasani wool, which gives the rug a softer feel.
