The designs are varied and often unique, including prayer mat, flower, tree of life and animal motif designs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe main colour theme of dark red, rust, navy blue, deep brown, and black, coming from madder root, indigo, and walnut husk dyes. These rugs often have a thick shaggy or a dense pile, which comes from their original use of covering floors, wrapping goods, sleeping, and religious purposes. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey are woven by the nomadic \u003cem\u003eBaluch \u003c\/em\u003epeople, an ethnic group with a long history in southwestern Afghanistan, including the provinces of \u003cem\u003eNimruz\u003c\/em\u003e, \u003cem\u003eFarah\u003c\/em\u003e, \u003cem\u003eHerat \u003c\/em\u003eand \u003cem\u003eHelmand\u003c\/em\u003e. Designs were often passed down orally and visually rather than written patterns.
